Important Safety Tips for Traveling to Bali

Methanol Poisoning

Methanol poisoning is a serious risk in Bali and can be fatal. To stay safe:

  • Only consume drinks you’ve purchased and opened yourself or use your own duty-free alcohol.
  • Research the risks of consuming spirits in Bali before drinking.

Theft

Theft can happen anywhere, including Bali. Stay vigilant:

  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry—leave it at home.
  • Keep your phone and valuables hidden and secure when exploring, shopping, or at the beach.
  • Be alert to pickpockets—they are quick and clever!

Bali Belly

If you experience symptoms:

  • Visit an Apotek (pharmacy) for advice and medication.
  • For severe cases, ask your accommodation to call a doctor.
  • With proper treatment, including medication or a quick injection, you’ll recover faster and get back to enjoying your trip.

Medical Advice

  • For serious medical needs, take your credit card and insurance papers to BIMC Hospital, which is highly regarded by Australian travelers.

Medications

Before traveling with medications, check Indonesia’s list of prohibited substances. Some medications legal in your country may be illegal in Indonesia, even with a doctor’s note.

Exchanging Money

  • Use reputable money changers to avoid scams.
  • Always count your money last to ensure the amount is correct.
  • Avoid money changers in small shops offering unusually high rates or ending in “99.”
  • You can also exchange money at your accommodation through trusted services.

ATMs

  • Skimming is common worldwide, including Bali. Always:
    • Cover your PIN when entering it.
    • Check the ATM for loose parts before use.
    • Walk away if the ATM looks suspicious.

Duty-Free Allowance

  • Entering Bali: Passengers 18+ can bring 1L of alcohol.
  • Returning to Australia: Passengers 18+ can bring 2.25L of alcohol, 25 cigarettes, and 1 open pack or 25g of tobacco.

Henna Tattoos

Be cautious with henna tattoos.

  • Some products may be mixed with harmful substances that can cause permanent scarring.
  • Research thoroughly before getting one to avoid adverse reactions.
